According to Annika Vogt, a researcher working for the UPMC University Paris, researchers at UPMC-Paris have been working on solutions that interact with the skin’s immune system without having to resort to the use of needles for more than 10 years. Annika mentions that a new non-invasive method is currently being developed and that this dream could actually become a reality soon.

This discovery was first made by researchers when they applied 200 nm particles on the surface of the skin and made use of microscopy to compare the penetration capabilities of these particles. It was discovered that the CSS method could actually help the particles to effectively penetrate the skin barrier and enter deeper into the skin’s layers, including the skin dendritic cells and the hair follicles, both of which are critical to the orchestration of the skin’s immune system.

Although further studies are required to transform this dream into reality, the current results show great promise for the production of mass vaccination. Moreover, it is believed that if these theories are combined with conventional vaccinations, skin vaccinations could actually help the body to generate more powerful and broader responses to fight all sorts of viral infections, including HIV.

The researchers of this study concluded that if better systems to reach and communicate with the skin’s immune system from the outside can be developed, it should become easier to develop tools for treating skin issues like inflammatory diseases, skin cancer or allergies with the help of needle-free vaccinations.
